Weddings should be well planned, financed and insured

The most important ingredient for a perfect wedding is having good weather on the day, according to research by Alliance and Leicester.

Consumers clearly can't insure themselves against the weather, but getting Wedding Insurance would at least mean that they were protected if anything did go wrong.

According to the research, some couples are unrealistic about the cost of their nuptials and many may not factor in the cost of wedding insurance.

Couples could end up with a budget shortfall of as much as 22 per cent with the average cost of a wedding being £19,400, nearly £3,500 more than the £16,000 people estimate it will be.

Richard Al-Dabbagh, Head of Personal Loans at Alliance & Leicester, said: "it appears that the actual cost of the Big Day is greatly underestimated, and it is essential to assess finances when budgeting for your special day. It may be sensible to opt for a low-rate personal loan to help with wedding day finances."

Wedding site Confetti.co.uk has said that the key to a great wedding is to make sure that everything is planned out well in advance. Carol Richardson from Confetti.co.uk explained: "Careful planning means setting a realistic budget from the outset."

Wedding insurance won't "break the bank"

As getting married is an expensive venture it is important that couples remember to plan Wedding Insurance into the cost of their big day.

That is according to wedding advice site hitched.co.uk, which estimates that the average wedding costs around £17,800.

Francesca Moore, spokewoman for the wedding website, said that they "would recommend taking out Wedding Insurance right at the beginning or as soon as the first major expenditure has been booked, bought or hired, such as a photographer, the wedding dress or the venue."

Although consumers may be tempted to save costs in the current unstable economic climate, the site suggest that "it could really benefit you in the long run".

Ms Moore went on to reassure couples that "compared to the amount that you are spending on the whole day, the cost of wedding insurance shouldn’t really break the bank".

Couples have been advised to find a policy that suits their needs best and to shop around to ensure that they have adequate cover.

Wedding insurers need to know if couples are planning an overseas wedding

Couples that are planning to get married abroad need to check with their insurer that they are fully covered before setting off.

That is the advice given by wedding website hitched.co.uk, which has warned that if anything were to happen it could costs couples "thousands of pounds".

Francesca Moore, spokeswoman for the wedding website, said that whilst it is not difficult to get wedding insurance that covers overseas nuptials, it is essential that a couple's insurer know they will be getting married overseas.

Ms Moore said: "If you do not explain that you are getting married overseas, and then you need to make a claim, the insurance policy might not be valid."

The wedding website has advised couples to shop around to ensure they are getting the best deal and the "right insurance from the right company".

According to the website, the average wedding now costs around £17,800 and "lavish and expensive" celebrity unions do, they say, have an influence on couple's choices.
